This song is just plain beauty. According to Joy Williams, the melody of Sweet Love of Mine floated into her consciousness on the whispers of the wind one July afternoon, as she rocked her newborn baby on a screened in porch in Nashville. Keeping time with light pats on his soft warm back, she rocked and swooned this song to sweet Miles, who was just a week old. Lucky boy.
Entering our lives in 2015 on Joy's first solo album, Venus (she previously swooned next to John Paul White in their dynamic Grammy Award-winning duo The Civil Wars) this album should be introduced with the words "... and now for something completely different."
Brining in influences from Portishead & Massive Attack to Kate Bush & Annie Lennox (I always hear a bit of Tori in Joy's songs as well) Venus is a little more urban thump and a little less dusty holler... but not without #TheFeels that Joy's emotive voice and heartfelt lyrics always produce.
That being said, my all time favorite flavor of Sweet Love of Mine is the acoustic version that Joy swooned with Matt Morris at The Grammy Museum in LA. You can really hear the beautifully nuanced quality of Joy's voice as she plays very well in the sandbox with Matt.... their harmonies are ON (Of course they are.)
Ok. Enough with the words. Just listen.
Sigh.
