Oh.
Man.
Brad Mehldau's rendering of Radiohead's "Knives Out" has gotten me high on sound. #ferserious. The already Jazzy "Knives Out" off Radiohead's 2001 album Amnesiac, has always been one of my all time faves.
What The Mehldau Trio does with this song, which appears on their 2005 album Day Is Done, is not necessarily an improvement (because it's pretty darn perfect in its original flavor). It's more of an elevation.
Jeff Ballard's up tempo yet sensitive drums, gliding beside Larry Grenadier's attentive, supportive yet driving bass is the perfect nest to support Mehldau as he swoons the haunting and familiar melody. He eventually dives off the edge for a free form, post-bop frolic into jazzland. While I usually present live tunes, after extensive research, I have decided that this studio version is the best mix from an audiophillac perspective. The balance is exactly what my ears want to hear.
Ahhhh, yes.
All my love,
