It's not just that Christian McBride can
- Play.
- The.
- Bass.
It's more that Christian McBride IS the bass. Deep, emotive, patient, creative and reliable, even the resonant depth of his voice feels so good in my ears. It makes sense that his musical instincts, skill and just plain swagger have earned him a gaggle of Grammys.
In an interview with Fox5ny for their "Modern Masters" segment (08/15), McBride reminisced about the time he played, what would be, James Brown's very last gig. Back stage, when all was played and put away, Mr. Brown stopped Christian and said "Son, I'm proud of you... You ain't just playin' bass, you upholding the standard!" (Get up'ah Get on up!)
Here is the Christian McBride Trio (Christian Sands on piano, Ulysses Owens, Jr. on drums and Christian McBride rockin the double bass) playing "I Guess I'll Have to Forget" from their 2013 release "Out Here".
Swoon.
Love,
P.S. This one goes out to my swingin' jazz piano playing nephew Jacob. HBD dude 😎.
