It's been 4 years since Dave Brubeck passed away... and I'm feeling all "sunrise sunset".
Aside from the obvious members of my clan (Mom, Dad, siblings etc) Dave Brubeck was an ever present member of my family. He never actually knew me, but, since the day I was born, his meticulous, out of the box and swinging jazz has been in my ears or at least, in my heart. Each note built my inner musical sense and made me a jazz girl for life.
I always imagine my Pop in the middle of the night, scruffy with exhaustion, holding a small, cranky me and shuffling into his "study". Before settling into his creaky rattan rocking chair (with black cushions), he didn't even hafta look as he flicked on the record player. Again, with his bleary eyes barely focused he directed the needle with his free hand to its favorite groove on "their" favorite album, Time Out.
As I hungrily gulped the warm milk into my small belly, the tunes went, just as easily, into my heart and soul. Together, this sustenance helped me grow into the person I am today.
Mr. Brubeck, you helped the world around us grow in such a beautiful and thoughtful way. For that, I am forever grateful.
And, thanks Pop.... for being cool in the true sense of the word.
I am one lucky kitty 🐱 .
All my swingin' love,
