Jocko Willink on Memorial Day

My Grandpop Jack.  One of many who served in WWII

Memorial Day has the potential to be so many things.  As well it should.  Because life is complicated.

And while it is a day off for many... it goes without saying that Memorial Day  is an emotional, heavy and sometimes painful day for many more.

I'm not alone in my opinion that, to use Memorial Day as an opportunity to appreciate those brave and strong men and women who have sacrificed so muchfor our freedom, is the point.

To me that means we remember those who never made it home to their families.  Allow ourselves to feel the empty spot at our tables, in our hearts and beds.  Understand the reasons behind our losses and feel proud of those we've lost.

It's also time to appreciate those who have returned to us, honor the sacrifices they've undoubtedly made and tell them, repeatedly, "I love you.  I'm proud of you."

And, for both sides of this coin, remember to smile, feel love and enjoy life.  It's easier said than done sometimes, I know.

So, take some time and feel the depth of Memorial Day and then, smile and enjoy your day off (without guilt) whether you're having a barbecue or going on a peaceful drive.  Enjoy your day, your time, your life because, you are Free to do so. And that’s the point.

Thank you for your service.

We love you.  We're proud of you.
