From Phantom to Fiona

Emmy Rossum proves herself talented and versatile in these very different roles.  Christine (Phantom of the Opera) and Fiona Gallagher, the big sister of the irreverent & endearingly vulgar Gallagher Bunch.

I’ve always had a ❤️/meh relationship with opera and musicals. Growing up, I couldn’t deny getting swept away buy Les Mis or even Cats but once we left the theater (with a t-shirt) it was always back to my indie/punk/Jazz melange.  In fact, my college roommates and I had a joke that the best way to ward off a potential attacker or even just, end an awkward social sitch, was to randomly start belting out show tunes.  It never failed (try it!).

HOWEVER, recently 2 things happened.  I was introduced to the musical meltings of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Phantom of the Opera  AND I allowed myself to binge through some of Showtime’s series Shameless  (makes any unique life seem extremely normal, even banal 😏).

While doing research, as I am want to do, I noticed that Emmy Rossum (Fiona Gallagher) is known for her role as Christine in the movie depiction of Phantom.

And man, it is a far cry from “F-ing Fiona“.  It’s no wonder either.  Ms. Emmy began her opera training at age 7 and, it shows.

This song will creep inside the sweetest part of your soul, and gently wrap itself around your heart strings with levity.

Do yourself a solid and,
