Kol Nidrei with Luka Šulić
In my mind, the music of the Kol Nidrei service from the Jewish Holy day called Yom Kippur is the sound of a soul begging, sobbing and pleading with GD for a good fulfilling life. For a life filled with actualized potential, success in all endeavors, good health, clarity and the knowledge that no matter what, we are loved truly, accepted and appreciated deeply for who we are, forever and always. And of course, an end to all physical, spiritual and existential suffering...
It's interesting to me that the actual Aramaic words of the Kol Nidrei service are pretty.... well, legal in nature. Annulling the community of any vows they had taken that year.... but the music... the music is dripping with raw desperation for hopefulness.... The sound of an exhausted life live-er painfully yet hopefully crying out to God when they know he is listening, when they know he is feeling. It's the delicate balance of the head and the heart.
Tonight Jewish communities across the globe will stand together and feel this music course through their beings, moving their precious and pure souls. There won't be a dry eye or a cold heart in the synagogue.
Listen to what I mean... Take it away my trusted Mr. Šulić. I present, Max Bruch's composition of Kol Nidrei performed by the Zagreb Soloists at the Lisinski Concert Hall in Zagreb. Swoon my aching soul....
Let's end on a high note shall we...
